One of the brand-new Trend Safaris featured at Future Festival 2017 is a company called SURFSET Toronto, which is on a mission to “shake things up” with its fun and innovative approach to fitness. Trend Hunter recently sat down with co-owner Andrzej Misiak to find out more about how the company uses surfing as the inspiration for its full-body exercise classes.

SURFSET Toronto was born out of a surfing trip taken by Misiak, during which he noticed that many people had difficulty getting up on their boards. Misiak wanted to help these people by creating a program that would help them to build the strength to surf better and to perform other physical activities. He thus created a unique exercise class that uses a training board called the RipSurfer X to help participants engage the full body from head-to-toe. The board is suspended by three air pockets that allow it to tip back and forth just as a real surfboard would in the water.

As Misiak explains, a SURFSET workout is a major departure from the kinds of static exercise classes that most people are used to. He notes that each SURFSET class challenges participants to work on “flexibility, range of motion, strength and endurance… everything you need, all in a short period of time.” However, Misiak also points out that SURFSET workouts are unique in that they incorporate aspects of mindfulness and meditation. As a result, participants also enjoy an opportunity to learn more about how the mind and body connect.
