Water sector organizations, including the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the Water Environment Federation (WEF), The Water Research Foundation (WRF), and Karmous Edwards Consulting (KEC), have launched a research initiative focused on the role of Generative AI (GenAI) in the water industry.

The project aims to clearly understand GenAI’s application within water utilities, develop best practices, and share case studies of successful implementations. Additionally, “a research roadmap will be developed to guide future advancements in GenAI technologies for the sector.”

The initiative will involve global water utilities, including those from “South Korea and the United Kingdom, to explore how GenAI can address infrastructure management, resource resilience, and public engagement challenges as GenAI’s ability to analyze large datasets can help improve resource management, support data-driven decision-making, and complement human expertise,” fostering innovation within the water sector.
